Grass seed mixtures and blends

by The Dream Lawn (Mantis)

Although most grass seed can be purchased as a single variety, mixtures and blends account for the vast preponderance of seed sold in America.

On the sound theory that no single kind of grass is likely to suit every part of your lawn, a mixture may include several varieties of seed, such as fescue, bluegrass, and perennial rye grass. With a good selection of grasses in a mix, the most adaptable and vigorous will withstand adverse conditions. The strengths of one variety compensate for weaknesses in another. Labels indicate the percentage of each kind of grass included in a mix.

A blend combines several cultivars of one strain, often Kentucky bluegrass. Consistency in color and texture and increased disease-resistance are the benefits.

A premier mix or blend is worth the extra money it costs. The germination rate will be high, and the seed will be weed- and disease-free. The few extra dollars spent can save you hundreds of dollars down the road.
