Faux finishing cleanup and basic Q&As

by Tom Typrowicz

If you used water-base glazes for your faux finishing, you may use water to clean the applicators. The label on the can of glaze should give you specific cleanup instructions.

However, if you worked with an oil-base glaze, you cannot clean your applicators with water. Instead, you will need to purchase and use solvent-base cleaners. Be sure work in a well-ventilated area and follow the label directions for a safe cleanup.

After reading these brief articles about faux finishing, you may still have some questions about tools and techniques. Here are some common questions:

Q: What color do I use first?
A: It is recommended that you use your darker color as a base coat and top it with a lighter-colored glaze since it is easier to blend lighter colors into a design. However, you do not have to use the darker color first. Make some samples to see what you like best.

Q: Can I use two light colors?
A: Yes, you may want to use two light colors, especially if you are faux finishing the walls in a small room.

Q: Do I have to use a glaze as my second coat?
A: Yes, the glaze will give you time to make the design you have chosen.

Q: Is it hard to make the designs?
A: No. The Unlimited Creations System of Rollers was designed for do-it-yourselfers and painters who are not familiar with decorative finishes.

Q: Why does my decorator roller slide?
A: Glazes applied to a smooth surface can be very slick. Take care to roll the decorator roller with light pressure.

Q: How do I get the effects in corners and along the ceiling line?
A: Easy! Corner rollers and 2-inch square-end rollers are made especially for these applications.

Q: Can I clean the tools?
A: Yes, the tools are very easy to clean with either water or solvent, depending on the type of glaze you applied.

We hope these questions and answers will be helpful as you plan and create your own unique decorative finishes. As always, we recommend that you carefully read and follow all the instructions provided by the manufacturer(s) of the products you select.
