Purchasing a door planer

QuestionI am looking for a door planer because I install doors for a living and have a need for this specialized tool. What door planer do you recommend?

AnswerA good door planer is very important, especially when installing door blanks into an existing frame.

It's hard for me to recommend a specific product because the tool market changes so rapidly. However, I find that a 3 1/4-inch planer with a 3/32-inch depth of cut is very useful. As you shop, look specifically for a deluxe angle fence/width stop, a "must item" for beveling the bore side of the door. Also handy is a discharge port selector lever that allows debris to be discharged from either side of the tool.

If you are unable to find a planer with these features, check with your contractor's supply house. They may have some suggestions and if they don't have in stock the product you select, they can order it for you.
